On the note of your HP320LX, yes, I do agreed with you, its more sturdy than
my Sharp PC3000 and a lot more powerful too. Wysiwyg isn't that great till
you consider bold and font size. Thus for a simple document(without tables)
its pretty much useable and access to all the new big cheap flash CF. But a
point, my vote won't go to the HP320LX. Its using the old WinCE 1.0(there is
a upgradable Rom to WinCE 2.0) plus its not so nice green backlit. Also it
is rather slow. My vote in this view will go to HP360LX. It's the same as
the HP320LX but with a faster processor (75Mhz compared to a 44Mhz) has a
White backlit instead, thus much nice to look at. And best of all, it's the
same size and weight and using AA batteries.
I think it is possible as long it is using the standard IDE, I know there
are IDE to PCMCIA/CF converters where it allow one to replace the HDD with a
solid state CF. But currently the big CF (the last update I know is 8GB) is
very expensive. Thus unless we can squeeze in to a 2GB(I think 1GB is the
sweet point now). It's a little small for modern OS. Unless looking for a
bare bone OS. (do a google search for the convertors) (Oh, not forgetting
the 504MB hdd limit)
I had a old 16Mhz 386SX laptop that uses 6 C size battery(but it suck
battery like nobody, 1-2hrs on alkalines, very expensive) I've taken out
its HDD, and its actually using the standard mini IDE that is still being
used in modern notebooks. Thus chances that yours may just be useable.

My vote goes to the HP320lx in this case, touch typing, wysiwyg, can handle
more types of PCMCIA cards than the 2mb SRAM cards (which are getting harder
to find, I suspect.) I mean , who uses 2 Mb cards unless they have to.
320lx has no problem reading 350mb SanDisk flash cards (or perhaps higher?)
320lx is smaller and feels more sturdy ... ...because it is more sturdy.
If long filename and the size is not an important factor, then I recommend
the old Omnibook 300 (4 AA batteries.) OB530 is the same subnotebook size
but can install Windows95 no problem. Omnibooks are larger than Poqet so
touch typing is great with its quality keyboard. I was able to get a full
install using a large enough SanDisk Flash Drive (so forget the website that
describes a complicated install onto the original HP 10 or 20MB Flashdisk.)
It is so nice to work on a Full W95 solid state unit because the speed seems
much faster than a PCMCIA spinning hard drive and, of course, the batteries
last much longer too!
I have a question to anyone on the list: If a legacy unit (286, 386,
Gateway Handbook, specifically) has a spinning hard drive, is it possible to
replace the hard drive with a PCMCIA card? I would like to do this simply
to convert them as a solid state machine if possible, and if so, some
pointers, please.
